till we find a better way towelcome the -- to welcome the immigrants who still see america as the land of opportunity. the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. >> reporter: we ran into ellen and asked her what she thought. >> there were many references to women, you know, how it is important for women to have equal wages, great job and also he made references to preserving the environment. >> reporter: later there was the parade. it traved 1.5 miles from the capital to pennsylvania avenue. >> we feel extremely honored. we were one of a few non-profits

police are investigating two robberies. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us with more about a close call for one family. jade? >> reporter: police say the robbers carried a shotgun and a hand gun. >> reporter: before sun rise police received a call about a suspicious door bell ring. as police responded 10 minutes later 4-5 robbers hit a house on the same block. the couple inside not hurt. across town, armed robbers struck again. >> the wife was putting out the garbage and she heard a shot. >> reporter: that shot may have been a warning at the second home invasion. the robbers again forced their way inside.

when the wife screamed someone punched her, locked the husband down stairs. as they left the wife fallowed them out, that is when the gun shot rang out. >> this one is very unusual. both in the time of crime and the time. >> reporter: he opened his door to show dogs that scared away the robbers. >> these people, you know, they are coming at us but the dogs were loud and scared them out. >> reporter: a neighbor said a burglary pushed her into buying an alarm system. >> i guess i have to have one now. this is really scary. >> reporter: piedmont is a target because of its location. >> it is easy to get out easy. >> reporter: the car had front

end damage and a african american woman was seen driving. at the second house they tried to make off with a computer, video equipment and a safe. there were four home invasions last year. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police are searching for the person behind a over night shooting around 1:00 a.m. the victim was identified by family members. he was walking home when someone started shooting. the family is questions why they were targeted. >> if someone witnessed the person that shot and killed my son that they would come forward. >> the other victim was rushed to san francisco general hospital with several gun shot wounds. he is expected to survive. this is san francisco's third homicide of the year.

bart officials are stepping up security after a man was killed and a woman was injured on saturday afternoon. boilings are meeting tomorrow -- bart officials are meeting tomorrow to discuss what happened and ways to increase safety and security at the station. police will likely put more officers on patrol and install better lighting. police in georgia are searching for a 49er fan who stabbed a falcon's fan in the throat yesterday in atlanta. the 35-year-old fan is expected to survive his injuries. after the championship game the victim got into a fight with a man and two women who were rooting for the 49ers but the fight turned violent and that is when one fan stabbed the other fan. in 7 minutes, the 49ers are back in the bay area, coach

harbaugh's comments. new at 5:00 p.m. a rescue this afternoon at ocean beach. news chopper 2 was over head spotting the surfer stranded on the rocks and crews told him to jump back in to the water. janet joins us live with how the surfer got into trouble and the rescue that took place. >> reporter: it was a beautiful day out here but it could have been a deadly outing for the surfer. he got too far from shore and then started cramping up and ended up getting stranded at seal rock and the rescue boat couldn't get in close enough to reach him. the call came in this afternoon. you can see the surfer was stranded on seal rock. officials tell me he was out

with a friend but started cramping and couldn't make it back to shore so he climbed on back of the rock. a police boat arrived but it was too dangerous to get close enough. that is when four swimmers went out and attempted the rescue. they had the surfer jump back into the water and when he had trouble one gave him the larger surf board. the surfer was a navsis only been -- novice and only been out a few times. . >> make sure you go out in partners and stay vigilant and also know what your skill level is. the water has been rough. >> reporter: officials say the man is all right tonight but a reminder this is the season of powerful waves. there have been more than a

. jackknifed tractor-trailer blocked three lanes of interstate 880 this afternoon. the lanes are back open now but traffic is still recovering from the wreck that happened about 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. california highway patrol says 50 gallons of diesel spilled on the to highway. no injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation. firefighters are investigating a suspicious early more fire that city hall building. it started around 1:30 a.m. inside a dumpster. firefighters say the flames spread to the inside of the building but did not cause extensive damage. >> it is minimal. office supplies, papers. file cabinet. >> the building was empty at the time of the fire. no word on a suspect or a motive. firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a fire. the began before 10:00 p.m.
